The purpose of these Kitchen Table Conversations (KTC) is to find out what our community in Bean values, what issues concern us and what we are looking for in our elected representatives. KTCs are safe places where a diversity of voices is encouraged and where we listen to each other. No voice is right, and consensus does not have to be achieved. It is an enjoyable process, where important matters are discussed in a way that ensures all voices can be heard. Responses from each conversation are compiled into a report which will guide the activities of Voices of Bean.

A host invites friends, colleagues or neighbours (up to ten people) to any venue that is convenient for two hours of sharing and discussion. Everyone has a turn to respond to several questions. There are ground rules that ensure everyone is heard respectfully with one person speaking at a time. One person takes the role of scribe, noting all views that are raised. There is more detail in the Host Kit.

Participants report that they are enjoyable and engaging! The information gathered gives a true representation of the community and will allow a Community Independent candidate to go to the next election knowing what is important to you. KTCs have been used successfully in many campaigns that have seen Community Independents elected to parliament.

Yes. You can attend one of our events, or you can add your name to the register of interest.

Politics is really for everybody and for every day: it’s simply having a say in how we run the country. It’s our right and responsibility to be part of that, and not to just turn up on election day and vote for the only choices on offer. If we want a better society, there is no ‘cavalry coming over the hill to save us’ – it’s up to each of us to get involved.

KTCs can be held wherever it is convenient: at home, in the park, or wherever you can get together.
